8 Steps to Writing a Bio

For most bloggers, writing a great story about their families is a breeze, but ask them to write a bio, and they go white as a ghost. What is it that is so scary about writing one? It’s hard to write about yourself, especially when you need to say something good. Here are 8 steps to write a compelling bio that people will actually want to read:

1. Keep it concise. No one is going to read a two-page bio detailing the events in your life. Your bio should be one or two paragraphs, maximum.
2. Write in the third person. A bio should seem objective despite having being written by you. Instead of “I am a mother of three”, try “Maureen is a mother of three.”
3. Introduce yourself. Your name should be in the very first line of your bio.
4. State your business. This is where you tell people what they can expect you to be writing about. You don’t need too many details, just a few key topics.
5. Let your personality shine. Add a little bit of information that they aren’t expecting, a hobby or an interest that might be a conversation starter. A little humour would be good too.
6. Contact Information. Be sure to include all the ways people can contact you at the end of your bio. Everything from email to Twitter. This will make it easy for people to reach out to you.
7. Proof-read, proof-read, PROOF-READ! Then get someone else to proof-read it. You don’t want any spelling mistakes, and a second opinion is always good.
8. Update your bio often. Don’t let it go stale, and be sure to keep it up-to-date by changing it every so often – there’s nothing like reading a bio about a “mom of one happy baby” but knowing she’s a mom of three big kids now!

   I had been wanting to know if you ever considered adjusting the page layout of your website? It is well written; I love what you have got to state. But maybe you can create a little more in the way of written content so people might connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of wording for only having one or two photographs. Maybe you could space it out better?
